Rich but Empty
The Great Gatsby is all about the American Dream. Mansions, luxury cars, power, status, etc. But the more you read the book, you start to realize that there is something else hiding underneath it all. For example, Gatsby's mansion is filled with people, but yet he's still lonely. Tom has power and status, but has no real peace. And Daisy? She has everything she could possibly want, but is lost in her own unhappiness. It feels like all of them are living in snow globes. You know those pretty pieces of art made with such care, they look elegant and pretty. But something is always trapped behind the glass.
As I read more of the book, I started to realize that money doesn't buy reality. Instead it replaces it. Gatsby has built a fantasy so big that he forgot where the truth is. Every party, every guest, and every car were all part of an image. The worst part? Everyone played along. They didn't know who he was, but still came for fun. Dancing to the music, drinking champagne, and eating plates filled with food. When the parties ended, it was always Gatsby who was alone. Left behind with all the empty glasses and plates.
This made me think of how people today chasing for luxury brands, homes, and curated lives online. They may look nice, but aren't real. Maybe Gatsby's tragedy is not realizing how to live outside of the illusion he has built. Reality is harsh. It's something that is unpredictable and something that money can definitely not buy. But the more you keep pretending it is and you'll eventually start to forget what's real in the first place.
Your blog is very well-written and truly resonates with many things we face today. This analysis made me look at The Great Gatsby differently. I also agree with many of your stances on how people get blinded by greed and forget how to truly live their life. great job!!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog!!! When you mentioned how the rich people were trapped snow globe, it also made me think of the term people use when they are “swimming in a fish bowl.” And when you talked about how people post about their luxury stuff online, I can totally relate seeing all of that. A similar thing I see online is when people make reels of how great their relationship is with their boyfriend or girlfriend, when in reality it is more complicated.
